The closing date for this year's Cardiff International Poetry Competition is fast approaching. Entry forms for the competition can be downloaded via the Literature Wales website and all entries must be recieved by the closing date of Friday 14th March.
The first prize winner for 2014 will receive £5000, with runner up prizes available ranging from £50 - £500. This year's judges are Rhian Edwards, Samantha Wynne-Rhydderch and Lemn Sissay and poems should be written in English, unpublished and no longer than 50 lines in length. Previous winners have included Geoff Lajbrok (2013), Mark Tredinnick (2012) and Malcolm Watson (2011). Jon Gower will be the special guest at January's open mic night at the Imperial Hotel in Merthyr Tydfil. The evening offers a relaxed environment for those wishing to read from their own work or just enjoy listening to others. Starts at 7.30pm, entry is free.

American author Claire Vaye Watkins has been announced as the winner of this year's prestigious Dylan Thomas Prize. The 29 year old author was awarded the prize for her collection of short stories entitled Battleborn at a ceremony in Swansea's National Waterfront Museum.
Seven authors had been shortlisted for the £30,000 prize, including Welsh writer Jemma L King and judges had previously praised the high standard of shortlist which Chair of the Prize, Peter Stead, described as an indication 'of the truly international scope of the prize'. The Prize was established in 2006 with Rachel Trezise awarded the first ever title, other previous winners have included Nam Le and Maggie Shipstead. Join Professor Dai Smith and Professor Peter Stead as they look back on the life and legacy of Gwyn Thomas in this event organised by the Learned Society of Wales. The evening will start at 7pm in Barry Arts Central and is free, but ticketed so registration is required through the event’s webpage. Light refreshments will be available from 6.30pm.
Art critic, novelist and poet Sue Hubbard will be reading from her latest collection, The Forgetting and Remembering of Air on Thursday 17th October at the Dylan Thomas Centre.
