The Wales-Ireland Research Network will be hosting a conference entitled 'Ireland, Wales and the First World War' from 10th - 12th September 2014, to mark the centenary of the start of the World War I.
2014 has so far seen the start of numerous centenary events seeking to commemorate the United Kingdom’s experience of First World War (1914-1918).Yet such commemoration is never straightforward or uncontested. The cultural memory of the lives lost in the war has itself been a continuing source of conflict and debate. While many of the commemorative events of 2014 will focus on a centralised, British view of the war, this interdisciplinary conference will offer an opportunity to examine the war from distinctively Welsh and/or Irish perspectives, focusing attention on the ways in which cultural memories, memorials, and mythologies are constructed in contested national contexts.
The conference will open with a special guest lecture by His Excellency Dr Daniel Mulhall, Ireland's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, entitled 'Secret Scripture: Two Irish war poets, Thomas Kettle and Francis Ledwidge'.
Other keynote speakers will include Paul O’Leary, Sir Deian Hopkin and Mary-Ann Constantine, with readings provided by Angela V. John and Mari Strachan. The full programme can be downloaded in full using the link below.
Conference registration is available at a reduced fee until Monday 18th August. Registration completed after this date will be subject to the full conference fees. To register download the form using the link below and return it to the Conference Organisers at: [email protected]
