The winners of the inaugural New Welsh Writing Awards were announced at a ceremony in Aberystwyth on Wednesday 25th February. Eluned Gramich was awarded first prize with her work with Scenes from a Hokkaidan Life and was presented with her cheque for £1,000 at the ceremony by author, naturalist and environmental activist Mark Cocker, who judged the entries alongside New Welsh Review editor Gwen Davies. Elaine Ewart came second with Heligoland, An Ecology of Exile and Philip Jones was named runner-up with Waves on the Hydrocarbon Seas of Titan.
Extracts from the short listed entries will be published in the Summer edition of New Welsh Review and winner Eluned Gramich's work will be released as an e-book by New Welsh Review later this year.
The New Welsh Writing Awards are run by People, Place & Planet: WWF Cymru Prize for Writing on Nature and the Environment, in association with WWF Cymru and the CADCentre. They are a brand new set of awards for previously unpublished non-fiction writing of between 8,000 - 30,000 words.
